The St. Andrews Pipe Band. If you’ve heard about our university before, you’ve likely heard about this famous musical organization. It’s one of our university’s most visible organizations.
The band’s appearances at competitions, Scottish Highland games, festivals, and other cultural events place it in front of thousands of people every year. Begun in 1991 as a project of our Scottish Heritage Center, the St. Andrews Pipe Band is one of the top-competing bands in the southern United States. Members include students from throughout the United States and Canada.
Our pipe band is a member of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association and has successfully competed in Grade III since 1999. This grade is the highest level of competition in the Southeastern United States. In 2006 the band was honored as the EUSPBA Grade III Southern Branch Champion after winning the March, Strathspey, and Reel and Medley contests at the Loch Norman Highland Games. The band’s recordings have been featured on programs on both National Public Radio and BBC Radio Scotland.
