Jack Lawson ’74: Education for Living

It seems Jack Lawson was destined to attend St. Andrews. Jack knew about the college from its beginnings. Growing up with Presbyterian roots in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, his two older siblings and friends from church attended St. Andrews before him. Jack graduated in 1974, majoring in Religion and Philosophy; he wanted to attend a learning community for college and, like many others, was drawn to the small student to faculty ratio at St. Andrews. Recalling his time at St. Andrews as the “most outstanding academic experience of his life,” Jack

What St. Andrews Means To Me

By Jeff Stonestreet ’68 It seems like only yesterday since my graduating class at St. Andrews crossed the causeway over a big beautiful lake proceeded by a fully-bedecked Scotsman playing his bagpipes. That momentous day was over 50 years ago. The statute of limitations has run out so a few things can finally be told. As I glanced around the campus on a recent visit, I can still see “ghosts” from the past on the movie screen of my memory from my St. Andrews days. The memories of joys and

Life Lessons at St. Andrews

By Jed Hawkes Koball ’95 Three of the most important lessons I learned at St. Andrews, I learned before the end of my first week on campus. Dr. Dick Prust, professor of Philosophy, was my SAGE instructor that year. His first writing assignment for us was to justify the courses we had chosen for our first semester of study. Having taken Calculus I in high school, I had the option to take Calculus II with upper class students. My approach, however, was to ease my way into the rigors of
