Then a major in Philosophy and Religious Studies may be for you. We critically examine religious beliefs and philosophical positions in search of better and more satisfying ways to think and live.

The B.A. program help students develop a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary impact of philosophy and religion on human culture as well as the critical reasoning skills to take examine and articulate the strengths and weakness of various religious and philosophical positions. Graduates are prepared for all sorts of careers in many fields.

While some students may choose to continue their education by going to graduate school or seminary, in order to pursue a career in ministry or higher education, a B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies provides what every employer today is looking for: a well-rounded, critical thinker, who goes deeper into a problem than most and offers novel, well-reasoned, and ethically substantive solutions. Whether you want to go into law, medicine, business, social work, or anything else, a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion will be great preparation for your future as a leader in your field.

Students in the philosophy and religious studies program engage in lively discussions, built around important ideas and texts, aimed at attaining a deeper understanding of ourselves, the world, and our place in it. The program focuses on teaching students how to think critically as they consider human life and society in all their complexity.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will acquire awareness and critical understanding of the formative religious traditions of human beings in a variety of cultures.
  • Students will acquire knowledge and a fundamental understanding of major philosophers and issues in the Western philosophical tradition.
  • Students will become appreciatively critical of their own religious traditions by engaging in a process of formulating their own mature questions and beliefs.
  • Students will be able to develop and defend their own well-reasoned position on one or more important philosophical issues.
